LPL Financial Recruits $440 Million Advisor From Merrill Lynch

LPL Financial has recruited a former Merrill Lynch advisor who oversaw $440 million to its Strategic Wealth Services unit, the firm said Monday. That unit provides extra assistance to wirehouse breakaways seeking to open independent practices.

Advisor Thom Mayer and his team joined LPL Financial in Phoenix. Maher oversaw approximately $440 million in advisory, brokerage, and retirement plan assets, according to LPL Financial. Maher had been registered with Merrill Lynch since 1997, according to BrokerCheck, a public database

Hurd, according to BrokerCheck, began his career with Merrill Lynch in 1986. In a statement, he said the team chose LPL because “we were essentially looking for the best model to serve our clients and grow our practice without any distraction, and aligning with Linsco by LPL enables our firm to do just that,” He added, “At LPL, our team can find straightforward answers and solutions to our business issues while enjoying the autonomy of building our brand and business in our day-to-day work.”

Except for Ebron, the advisors have all been with Merrill Lynch since they began their careers, according to BrokerCheck. Spencer started in 2008 and Alessandria in 2003; Jorgensen started with the firm in 2006. Ebron began with Morgan Stanley in 2001 but left shortly after that for Merrill Lynch, where she stayed for four years before moving to Citigroup Global Markets in 2005. She rejoined Merrill Lynch in 2006.

Spencer said the transition to LPL has been seamless. “LPL’s focus on advisors’ ability to build a business of value on their own terms is perfectly in tune with our business goals. With this move, our team can streamline processes and minimize the time we spend doing administrative work. We are also impressed by LPL’s open architecture, which gives us flexibility to explore new technology and capabilities,” he said.

Scott Posner, LPL’s executive vice president of business development, noted that “Linsco advisors get the best of both worlds—support and security—without worrying about administrative operations.” He added that LPL is proud to support the Broadway Wealth Management team of LPL Financial and looks forward to a long-lasting partnership.
